Hi! And welcome to 'Shanté's Scenechange'!!
My name is Shanté and I am 22 years old. I completed my LLB Law degree in June 2013, achieving a first class honors. Having spent four years at university, I spent the third year of my undergraduate life studying in California, majoring in Government Studies. Whilst out there I joined the co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, which focused on helping others on campus and in the local community- through friendships, leadership and service. One of the highlights was helping out at the local church to feed the homeless. During my year aboard, I also attended a month at summer school in Shanghai, learning Chinese Politics and Mandarin, before returning for my final year, which had me moving into the library and living with the books! I thoroughly enjoyed my year and a bit aboard studying in America and China as I have been able to indulge myself into different cultures and allowed me to see how adaptable I am, which is a great trait to have. Plus I'm now loving having conversations in Mandarin with people and seeing total and utter shock on faces! Haha!
I am a Londoner born and bred, with African (Nigerian) and Caribbean (Jamaican) blood flowing within me. I love London- the energy and all, but there is something about seeing the world and all its beauty that appeals to me so badly. Basically, I love travelling. I am blessed to have traveled to various countries around the world- but I know I still have way loads more to explore. Can’t wait!
I thoroughly enjoyed studying law- though there were many times I asked myself why?! I could have chosen an easier path-but I know that there is no substitution to hard work. And I know that my degree is only the beginning. Furthermore, being an opportunistic, optimistic and determined to succeed individual, I know that with hard work, I will achieve what God has destined for me to achieve. Law is so fascinating and complex, yet quite simple at times. I believe it’s something we should all know about, as it governs our daily activities.
Putting law to the side- I love the art that is acting. I have been performing with various drama companies for many years, including with the National Youth Theatre in the U.A.E. for a month- I just simply love it! Getting on stage and entertaining and relating to a crowd- it’s just so powerful! I want to do it more than I do- everyday, on stage, yes please!
Fashion. I’m not going to say I love it haha. I am starting to sounds like a broken record. I say, I embody it. I embody it because I make it me. I love incorporating my own touch into outfits and making it unique to me, standing out from a mundane crowd at times. No offence. Check out my life and style blog by clicking on the 'more' tab. It's on pause for the duration of my placement.
I feel very blessed and privileged to have been given this opportunity with Tearfund, as it is something I am very passionate about. Having studies genocide as one of my classes whilst studying in the States, I am looking forward to seeing the effects of it with my own eyes. That aside, I am looking forward to helping those that will cross paths with me. I am also excited on seeing the country-its sights and social life too. Most importantly, I am excited about strengthening my faith in God, as this is a daily process, to be out there and see how they praise Him, I am looking forward to learning from them to ensure my connection with God continues to get stronger and stronger.
